Coach Them to Speak

A Practical Guidebook for College Oral English Teachers in China

Lots of Westerners are moving to China to teach English in colleges and universities and most of them teach a class called Oral English. But they usually receive little or no guidance on how exactly to teach that course. One of the mistakes they make (and we ourselves made at first) is to think of Oral English as a class to be "taught" instead of a skill to be "coached." In fact, Oral English teachers are much more like P.E. teachers than we think a traditional English teacher should be. This book contains tips and guidance we've acquired in a cumulative total of almost two decades of teaching Oral English in China. Our hope is that it will help you and your students enjoy Oral English as much as we have.

Complimentary Resources

The resources below:

  • Include supplemental materials for our guidebook Coach Them to Speak.

  • Are customized for teachers in China (although some may be useful to teachers in other countries).

  • Focus on oral English teachers.

  • Are trimmed down for maximum usefulness for the sort of teacher described above (number 4). I may have left out things that hard-core linguists would say are important. But for these resources, usefulness trumps completeness.

  • Came as reactions to the needs of current English teachers in China. Most of the resources on this site were created because some of the 60-70 foreign English teachers at Guangdong Peizheng College 广东培正学院 said something like, “Hey it would be great if we had such-and-such.”

…and a few posters.
